The ‘Brine Trail’ was recently renovated and is a fantastic route leading from Bad Ischl along the oldest pipeline in the world – built in 1607.

You can take the path either toward Ebensee or Hallstatt. Along the entire path the attentive hiker can learn bits and pieces about the history of salt mining and it’s significant influence on the subsequent development of the region while passing historical buildings and other sites rife with lore. If you follow the trail toward Hallstatt, be sure to plan the return with a boat or train – it’s worth the experience.
