The castle ruins, that were first chartered as “Veste Wildenstein” in 1392 tower high above the village.
From there one enjoys a fantastic view of the imperial town. From 1419 onwards Wildenstein was the seat of the imperial caretakers who ruled over the Ischl area. As the building was a fortress it featured towers, battlement parapets, ring walls, and a drawbridge. In August 1593 a devastating fire broke out in the castle. Chronicles report of a second fire in 1715. Since then the fortress has gone to ruin. The Ischl Local Heritage Association has been trying for years to prevent the complete dilapidation of the building. Today comfortable benches invite to take a break in the courtyard.
The ruins are accessible all year; admission is free. Two routes lead to the ruins starting from the Katreinseilbahn base station. You can either walk up the steep skiing slope or take the more relaxed trail right of the slope that leads uphill in serpentines.
