Sisi and Bad Ischl

Empress Elisabeth is associated with Bad Ischl in many ways. In the house in Esplanade No. 10, today’s Bad Ischl town museum, she celebrated her engagement to Emperor Franz Joseph on August 19, 1853

Kaiserin Elisabeth - SISI

'If only he were a tailor', she is said to have proclaimed. 'The Emperor of Austria must not be turned down”, stated her mother Ludovika firmly. Here Sissi’s “only”, favourite daughter Marie Valerie celebrated her wedding. The Emperor’s family came to Ischl to mourn the death of crown prince Rudolf. And there the Emperor and the Empress saw for the last time before she was murdered in Genf.

The Life of Empress Elisabeth:
Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, called Sissi, was born in Posshofen (Bavarian plateau) on December 24, 1837. Sissi immigrated to Vienna in 1854 and became famous in the imperial and royal metropolis. Despite the prevalent misogynistic atmosphere and not having been a student of literature she became a Heine expert. Not caring about public opinion she was a Buddhist Taoist, a feminist border crosser, a top riding athlete, a nomadic traveller in time and a critical poet. She was assassinated in Genf on September 10, 1898. She then entered the cycle of rebirth of the dissident modern movement.
