The Bad Ischl local nativity scene in the Bad Ischl Town Museum!

Franz Oberleitner, resident of Ischl, laid the foundations of the nativity scene, when he swore to build a large nativity scene if his childless marriage were blessed with children.

When his sun was born in 1838 he started to build a votive nativity scene immediately and finished only once he had made some 300 figures.

Oberleitner sold the nativity scene to the merchant Johann Kalß, who added moving figures systematically.
When merchant Kalß died in 1914 he left the nativity scene to his son Johann Kalß, who again passed it on to his daughter Elise in 1950. Following her deceased father’s wish she sold the nativity scene to the Ischl Heimatverein association in 1952. The curator Dusch put up the nativity scene in the kitchen of the Lehár building.

In 1985 the nativity scene was moved to the Bad Ischl Town Museum. In 1993 sound and light were added to the nativity scene.
