Operetta in Bad Ischl

What could be more suitable tha getting to know the Lehár town of Bad Ischl within the scope of an operetta performance.

(14th July to 2nd September 2012)

Lehár Festival Bad Ischl

In 2012 "The Bird Seller" and "Gypsy Love" are staged.

"THE BIRD SELLER" FIRST NIGHT: 14th July 2012
Operetta in three acts by Carl Zeller, Words by Moritz West and Ludwig Held

The Tyrolean, Adam, makes his living selling birds to the local residents of the Pfalz in Germany. He is in a relationship with Christl, the post girl. Princess Marie, disguised as a village girl, pays a surprise to catch her unfaithful husband in the act. Adam is flirting with the princess, yet he is jealous when Christl tries to persuade Stanislaus, the nephew of baron Weps – who pretends to be the prince – to obtain a court position for Adam. In the end the original couples (re)unite. For this operetta Zeller created an outstandingly beautiful score and the piece itself is one of the all time operetta evergreens.

"GYPSY LOVE" FIRST NIGHT: 21st July 2012

Romantic operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár, Words by A. M. Willner and Robert Bodanzky

The creation of this operetta not only marks the beginning of a lifelong, extremely successful cooperation and friendship between Lehár and his star, the tenor Richard Tauber, but also shows his genuine passion for operatic stories. It is the tale of Zorika, the daughter of  the wealthy lord of the manor Dragotin. She is torn between her passionate love for the gypsy violinist Joszi and Jonel Bolescu, the man she is supposed to marry. In a dream she has the revelation her amour fou with Joszi would  destroy her and therefore she chooses the secure life  with Jonel. Until today this work remains one of Lehár's richest and most beautiful scores.
